Located a short distance from Swindon, we highly recommend visiting the charming town of Royal Wotton Bassett. While Swindon itself has plenty to offer, including museums, restaurants, and shopping centers, Wootton Bassett has plenty to experience.
In this post, we'll share our top recommendations for things to do in the town. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a peaceful getaway, Royal Wootton Bassett has something to offer. So pack your bags, hop on a bus or a train, and let's explore this hidden gem together!
Explore the High Street
Of course, we're biased, but the High Street in Royal Wootton Bassett is a charming town full of independent shops, cafes, and pubs. It's a great place to spend an afternoon browsing, shopping, and soaking up the town's friendly atmosphere. You'll find everything from antiques to boutique clothing shops. Stop for a coffee at Jo Jo's Cafe or a pint of local ale at The Angel.
Visit St. Bartholomew's Church
St. Bartholomew's Church is a beautiful and historic building that dates back to the 13th century. It's one of the town's most recognizable landmarks, with its impressive tower and spire visible from many parts of the town. Inside, you'll find some stunning stained glass windows and other architectural features, as well as a welcoming community of local parishioners.
They have a Card & Board Games event every second Sunday. Bring your own non-electronic board games or try out one of their own!
Watch a game of rugby and football!
Just off the B4042, you'll find Royal Wootton Bassett Rugby Club and Royal Wootton Bassett Town FC.
If you're after football, the Men's First Team typically play on Saturdays and throughout the week. They're currently playing in the Hellenic League Premier Division. Find their latest fixtures and prices on their website.
For rugby fans, there's over 5 adults teams to choose from to watch. The 1st XV Men's team (and most of the others) play every Saturday. Most games are free to attend - check their Twitter for the latest fixtures.
Visit the Town Hall Museum
The Royal Wootton Bassett Museum is a small but fascinating local history museum, located in the heart of the town. It's run entirely by volunteers and has a range of exhibits on the town's history and culture, including displays on the town's military connections and its role as a market town.
The museum is open most Saturdays from 10am-12pm. Pop in one morning before visiting us!
